Speech Pathology Tools and Research:

Dog therapy:

While dogs are known to be great everyday companions and pets, recent case studies have illustrated that dogs may also have a significant benefit for communication and social interactions in individuals with communication deficits. Dogs can understand and connect with human communications – both verbal and nonverbal. In addition to this, they may be viewed as brilliant empathetic listeners to those who feel isolated in the community due to their communication struggles. Research has illustrated that Animal Assisted Therapy may promote both overt social-verbal and social-nonverbal communication, ultimately aiding clients to achieve their communication goals. Dogs may increase social prospects for clients and increase their feelings of security in the community. Through this, Animal Assisted Therapy may support clients’ emotional encounters and enrich their everyday lives by aiding societal participation. Here at ACS, we are starting to explore how we can apply some of the research around the benefits of Animal Assisted Communication Therapy and our clients may get to meet our favourite four legged companions!

Rebecca Billington-Kerr’s Presentations

My Support Space & My Allied Health Space

Jan Mackey (director and speech pathologist) collaborated on the development of online training resources called my support space. My Support Space is an online resource which offers free education and information resources for disability support workers, health professional students and graduates, and Allied Health Assistants working with people with acquired brain injury (ABI) within supported living environments. The resource was developed by a project team from Monash University, in partnership with people with lived experience of ABI and a range of community health professional and disability service organisations. This project was funded through the Innovative Workforce Fund from the Department of Social Services, managed by National Disability Services. This project had important and powerful initiatives that support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers - and strengthen the workforce providing support to them - within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Jan also collaborated on the development of an online resource called My Allied Health Space. This resource aims to develop the skills and knowledge of allied health professionals to respond to the goals and support needs of people with disability and complex support needs.
